Beyond the Lights Celebrity Golf Classic Goes "Green"

The Beyond the Lights Celebrity Golf Classic is premiering as only the second "green" and carbon neutral celebrity golf tournament in the United States. At 11:00am, March 7, 2008, 150 golfers including 30 celebrities will take to the green at Wolfdancer Golf Club for charity in Austin, Texas.

Beyond the Lights Chair Heather Page and staff have committed themselves to being environmentally aware in the planning of the event and through their choices of supplies and vendors. The Golf Classic is working with Charles Wagner, President of the Austin startup, MoveNeutral.com, to estimate the "carbon footprint" arising from venue energy use, vehicle consumptions, and player and attendee travel. The Tournament and MoveNeutral will then negate the impact of these estimated emissions by purchasing 50 short tons of "carbon offsets" from NativeEnergy. These offsets will be used to support American-owned renewable energy projects, thereby curbing future carbon emissions.

According to Heather Page, the tournament is applying more mainstream environmentally friendly products and concepts to its golf event. "For example, a Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid, "Green Car of the Year" by Green Car Journal, provided by Capitol Chevrolet of Austin, is the prize for a hole-in-one. We are using French Paper Company's recycled paper stock, manufactured with 100% clean, renewable hydroelectric energy produced at its mill, and the publications use hazelnut oil inks in their printing. Our office for the event subscribes to the Austin Energy Green Choice Program and we are committed to recycling and minimizing waste as a way to lessen the event's impact on the environment."

The event chose the Wolfdancer Golf Club, located at Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa, because it is a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. The program helps golf courses protect the environment while preserving the natural heritage of the game of golf. Wolfdancer works closely with the Lower Colorado River Authority, which runs the McKinney Roughs Nature Park adjacent to the course, to ensure the integrity and longevity of the river.

The tournament, hosted by actors Brad Leland and Kyle Chandler of NBC 's critically acclaimed series "Friday Night Lights", also features a private performance by "Friday Night Lights" feature film actor and country superstar Tim McGraw. The event benefits the Gridiron Heroes and the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis/The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.

Tim McGraw Joins "Friday Nights Lights'" Stars for Spinal Cord Injury Benefit

Tim McGraw Joins "Friday Night Lights" Stars for Spinal Cord Injury Benefit Superstar Tim McGraw will perform an intimate concert for participants of the Beyond the Lights Celebrity Golf Tournament, hosted by Kyle Chandler and Brad Leland of NBCs "Friday Night Lights." The tournament and concert will take place on Friday, March 7th, 2008, at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort, with proceeds going to both the Gridiron Heroes Spinal Cord Injury Foundation and The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis.

McGraw appeared in the Friday Night Lights feature film in 2004, also produced by Peter Berg, honorary Chairman of this year's event. Berg, McGraw and Friday Night Lights star Billy Bob Thornton organized a benefit concert in the spring of 2004 for Gridiron Heroes, which supports high school football players who've suffered spinal cord injuries while playing.

Gridiron Heroes is a cause that has special meaning to McGraw. Not only is he a former high school football player himself, but, "As a parent," he said, "there's a camaraderie that you have with other parents when something happens to their children. Your heart goes out to them."

Kyle Chandler and Brad Leland Kick Off Beyond the Lights Celebrity Golf Classic

Actors Kyle Chandler and Brad Leland of the critically acclaimed NBC television show "Friday Night Lights" have kicked off the inaugural Beyond the Lights Celebrity Golf Classic in Austin, Texas on March 7th, 2008 with a luncheon held at the event's venue, The Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa.

The tournament will be held at the new, award-winning Wolfdancer Golf Club at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa, and will benefit two charities: The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis/The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis and Gridiron Heroes Spinal Cord Injury Foundation.

The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis is the world's largest, most comprehensive spinal cord injury research center, based at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The Gridiron Heroes is a central Texas charity that provides immediate and long-term resources and support to individuals sustaining catastrophic spinal cord injury through activities associated with high school football.

Slated to take place the same day SXSW opens, the Beyond the Lights Golf Classic features actors from both the Friday Night Lights TV series and motion picture, along with many other sports, music and entertainment celebrities.

The Tournament includes several contests, with prizes ranging from a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid, to a cruise, electronics package and golf clubs. The day's events will be followed by a cocktail reception, silent auction, Texas themed buffet dinner and awards ceremony. The evening will be capped off with a live performance for the Tournament attendees, their families and friends at the Hyatt's open-air amphitheater overlooking the Colorado River.

The hosts learned about those living with paralysis by getting to know and work with actors with real-life spinal cord injuries while shooting "Friday Night Lights". The first episode was inspired by real life events in which a community witnesses a tragic football accident - a spinal cord injury suffered by a high school star quarterback.

The strength, courage and determination of those young actors and others who live with paralysis moved and inspired the hosts into action. Their first annual Golf Classic hopes to create greater public awareness of those affected by spinal cord injuries and support those that focus on care, research and finding a cure for paralysis.
